What is the best material for 3D printing car parts?

 

  • ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate): This is widely considered the best overall choice for functional car parts. It offers high heat resistance (up to ~212°F / 100°C), excellent strength, and built-in UV resistance, making it perfect for both interior and exterior components.

  • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): Very similar to ASA in strength and heat resistance, but it will fade and degrade over time if exposed to direct sunlight.

  • PETG: A decent budget option for non-critical interior trim or dashboard pieces, but it can still sag or warp on a very hot summer day.

  • PLA: Avoid PLA for functional car parts. It is cheap and easy to print, but it begins to soften and melt at around 134°F (56°C) — a temperature easily reached inside a parked car. Use it only for test-fitting prototypes

 

 

Can I 3D print parts for my engine bay?

It is highly risky. Engine bays are incredibly hostile environments that experience extreme heat, constant vibration, and exposure to harsh chemicals (oil, fuel vapors, coolant). Even high-temperature plastics can fail over time under these conditions. For engine bay use, consumer 3D printing is best reserved for temporary test pieces or mockups. If you must create functional engine bay parts, you will need to utilize metal 3D printing or high-end engineering composites like titanium or stainless steel.

Is it safe to 3D print structural or safety-critical components?

No. You should never DIY-print safety-critical parts. This includes components related to braking, steering, suspension, seat belts, airbags, or crash structures. Home-printed plastics cannot guarantee the rigorous testing, sheer strength, or legal certifications required to protect occupants in a crash. Stick to cosmetic, non-critical, or low-load applications (like cupholders, radio bezels, and trim plates).

How do 3D printed parts handle automotive fluids?

Automotive fluids such as oil, grease, brake fluid, coolant, and washer fluid can soften, swell, or crack many common plastics. Before installing a printed part near any fluid, you must verify the specific chemical compatibility of your filament and test a sample. Do not use an untested printed part to seal, carry, or control vehicle fluids.

Do 3D printed car parts require post-processing?

Yes, depending on the desired finish. At a minimum, you will need to remove any temporary support structures generated during the print. For a more professional, OEM-quality look, parts can be sanded to remove layer lines, primed, and painted. Some slicer software also offers a "Fuzzy Skin" setting, which can artificially create a textured surface that closely mimics factory automotive plastics.

I have a project but I can't explain it very well. How can Green Bull help me?

We can work with you to get a good description of your idea, once we have a starting point we will share CAD drawings back and forth until the idea is just as you pictured it.

I have my own 3D printer and want to make my own parts, can Green Bull design it for me?

Yes! While we can not guarantee your personal results as 3D printing is a somewhat complicated process with several variables, we can absoultely design your item and submit a "Ready to print" file.

I like one of Green Bulls original designs but I want to print it and alter it myself. Will you sell me the file only?

No. Our original designs are ours alone with priceless hours of design, fitment, and trial and error to produce a quality product. Therefore we can not sell just the files for our original designs. However, Alterations to our designs can be collaborated on and a custom part can be made just for you!

It's plastic, so what happens when it breaks?

It is plastic but it is various types of plastic which we use according to application making the "when" an "if". We test all of our products in real world situations to ensure you are recieving a ready to use part. But, if for any reason a part should fail, all of our parts are backed with a standard 90 day warranty with very few exemptions which would be clearly stated at the time of sale. If you should have an issue with any of our products we urge you to reach out to us directly so that we can resolve the matter for you. We are very much customer satisfaction driven!
